What intermittent fasting means

Intermittent fasting is a way of timing your meals. Instead of changing what you eat, you choose a window of hours for eating and a window of hours for not eating.

Johns Hopkins Medicine describes the daily approach like this: it “restricts daily eating to one six- to eight-hour period each day.”

The best-known version is 16/8, which it describes as “eating during an eight-hour window and fasting for 16 hours.” In most schedules, a big part of the fasting hours falls overnight, while you sleep.

13:11, 16:8, 18:6 and 20:4, side by side

The first number is the hours of fasting. The second is the hours of eating. Together they always make 24.

  • 13:11. 13 hours without food and an 11-hour eating window. For example, finish dinner at 8 pm and have breakfast at 9 am. A gentle first step for many people.
  • 16:8. 16 hours of fasting and 8 hours of eating, for example between noon and 8 pm. This is what most people mean by “intermittent fasting”.
  • 18:6. 18 hours of fasting and a 6-hour window, such as 1 pm to 7 pm. A longer, stricter routine.
  • 20:4. 20 hours of fasting and a 4-hour window, such as 3 pm to 7 pm. This goes beyond the six- to eight-hour windows Johns Hopkins describes, so talk to your doctor before you try it.

Longer is not automatically better. A schedule that fits your health, and that you can keep without dread, is easier to live with than an ambitious one.

Who should talk to a doctor first

This part matters more than any schedule. Johns Hopkins Medicine lists people who should not try intermittent fasting:

  • Children and teens under age 18.
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • People with type 1 diabetes who take insulin.
  • Those with a history of eating disorders.

Mayo Clinic adds that it may not be a healthy pattern for people at high risk of bone loss and falls. It lists possible side effects such as feeling very tired and dizzy, headaches and mood swings.

If you have diabetes of any type, take medication or live with another condition, talk to your doctor before you change when you eat.

Johns Hopkins advises seeing your doctor if you get “unusual anxiety, headaches, nausea or other symptoms.”

And if fasting starts to feel obsessive, or you feel unwell, stop and ask for medical advice. That is the right call.

How to track a fasting window

Tracking a fast comes down to two times: when your last meal ended, and when your eating window opens again. Everything else is detail.

  1. Pick a schedule and a realistic start time. An evening start often works well, because sleep covers part of the fast.
  2. Note the time you finish eating. That is the start of your fast, not the time you go to bed.
  3. Know your goal time. On 16:8, a fast that starts at 8 pm ends at noon the next day.
  4. Write down how it felt. A word or two is enough: easy, hungry, tired, busy day.
  5. End early when you need to. Stopping because you feel unwell is the right decision, not a failure.

Johns Hopkins says it can take two to four weeks to get used to a new routine, and that “you might feel hungry or cranky” while you adjust.

Keep it calm, not strict

A fasting routine can slowly turn into a test you keep failing. It doesn’t have to work that way.

If a fast ends early, or you skip a day for dinner with friends, that day still happened. Your history is still there, and tomorrow is a new window.

This guide makes no promises about weight or your body. Intermittent fasting is a way of timing meals. Think of tracking as noticing, not judging.

İkisinin toplamı her zaman 24 eder.

  2. Yemeği bitirdiğin saati not et. Orucun yattığın saatte değil, son lokmada başlar.
  3. Hedef saatini bil. 16:8’de akşam 20:00’de başlayan oruç ertesi gün 12:00’de biter.
  4. Nasıl hissettiğini yaz. Bir iki kelime yeter: kolaydı, acıktım, yorgundum, yoğun bir gündü.
  5. Gerekirse erken bitir.
